Reviews the book, Meeting Movies by Norman N. Holland (see record 2006-11509-000). Meeting Movies is a very personal book in which Holland discusses eight films that have been personally meaningful to him. These films are Casablanca, Vertigo, The Seventh Seal, Freud, Persona, Children of Paradise, Shakespeare in Love, and 8 1/2. Holland describes what he was doing with his life when he saw each of these films, and he discusses how each film affected his life and his career. Some of the movies were seen relatively recently, and some were first viewed over half a century ago. In reading the book, it becomes apparent that Holland loves films. Whenever text is in Roman type, Holland is operating in his reader-response critic mode, and the discussion reads much like any other film criticism. However, the most interesting parts of the book occur when Holland is in free association mode, writing about whatever thoughts the movie being discussed brings to mind. These instances are set off from the regular text by use of italicized text. In summary, Meeting Movies is a good read. Holland is well versed in psychology and especially psychoanalytic approaches, and his criticism of these eight films is consistently interesting. His willingness to self-disclose makes this book all the more fascinating. The book will be rewarding for anyone genuinely interested in the interface of psychology and film. Although penetration of wind generation may displace a significant amount of energy produced by large conventional plant, there are issues associated with the extent to which wind generation will be able to replace the capacity and flexibility of conventional generating plant. This is important since wind power is variable, so it will be necessary to retain a significant proportion of conventional plant to ensure security of supply especially under conditions of high demand and low wind. Hence, the capacity value of wind generation will be limited as it will not be possible to displace conventional generation capacity on a “megawatt for megawatt” basis. Wind power is variable and not easy to predict, hence various forms of additional reserves will be needed to maintain the balance between supply and demand at all times. Additionally, if the majority of wind generation plant is located in Scotland and the North of England, reinforcement of the transmission network will be needed to accommodate the increases in the north-south flow of electricity.  相似文献

In the framework of a land cover study of a reclamation area, a high‐resolution IKONOS scene characterized by an extremely non‐homogenous haze cover was processed in order to reduce haze and calculate some vegetation indices (VIs). Haze removal was performed by means of a technique based on the haze optimized transform (HOT). As HOT is also sensitive to components other than haze, with respect to the original procedure we introduced a second step in which the haze component estimated from HOT was masked both for water bodies (as in the original approach) and urban features (responsible for high HOT values). Interpolation was finally performed in order to reconstruct haze in such areas. Dark‐object subtraction (DOS) was then performed on the dehazed scene in order to estimate approximate soil reflectances necessary to calculate VIs. Their calculation for original and dehazed data illustrates the beneficial effects of the haze removal process and shows that, in the case of severe haze cover, even so‐called atmospherically resistant VIs require a preliminary haze removal procedure.  相似文献

A direct load management scheme with two‐way communication, with consideration of end‐user comfort, is proposed. First, the control algorithm is developed and the data required to be transmitted between system operator and controllable loads are identified. Then, the actions of controllable air conditioners and the power adjustment of dispersed generators to eliminate overloads in a substation transformer are simulated. The results indicate that the proposed load management technique performs effectively to reduce overloads on the transformer while maintaining energy consumption in each load, and the performance is improved by coordination with the output of dispersed generators. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report here our preliminary investigations on the mechanism of α-TTP-mediated ligand transfer as assessed using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assays. These assays monitor the movement of the model α-tocopherol fluorescent derivative ((R)-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-chroman-2-[9-(7-nitro-benzo[1,2,5]oxadiazol-4-yl amino)-nonyl]-chroman-6-ol; NBD-Toc) from protein to acceptor vesicles containing the fluorescence quencher TRITC-PE. We have found that α-TTP utilizes a collisional mechanism of ligand transfer requiring direct protein–membrane contact, that rates of ligand transfer are greater to more highly curved lipid vesicles, and that such rates are insensitive to the presence of anionic phospholipids in the acceptor membrane. These results point to hydrophobic features of α-TTP dominating the binding energy between protein and membrane. A continuous fluorometric assay for tryptophan hydroxylase activity based on the different spectral characteristics of tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptophan is presented. Hydroxylation of tryptophan at the 5-position results in a large increase in the fluorescence of the molecule. The assay selectively monitors the fluorescence yield of 5-hydroxytryptophan by exciting the reaction mix at 300 nm. The rate of increase of the emission signal was found to be directly proportional to the enzyme concentration. Inner filter effects due to quinonoid dihydropterin accumulation were eliminated by the inclusion of a thiol reductant. Activity measured using this assay method was found to be the same as that determined by established discontinuous HPLC assay methods. The application of the assay to routine activity measurements and to steady-state determinations with the substrates tryptophan and tetrahydropterin is described.  相似文献

In this paper, the performance of an all-fiber short-wave IR (SWIR) transmitter with wideband tunability and high peak power is reported. Transmitter construction relied on parametric process in highly nonlinear fiber to convert a seed laser at 1260 nm to 2155 nm SWIR channel with record 39 dB efficiency and translation over 900 nm spectral range. We demonstrated 61 W of peak converted power at 2 $mu$m and 26 W at 2.15 $mu$ m. Efficient conversion was made possible by engineered fourth-order dispersion of the highly nonlinear fiber and construction of a low-noise pump source in a 1550 nm band.   相似文献
